Earth Hour 2026: a salon-sized hour that can spark year-round change
Share
Earth Hour is the moment each March when people, businesses and landmarks around the world switch off non-essential lights for one hour to show support for the planet. In the UK, Earth Hour 2026 falls on Saturday 28 March at 8:30pm.
At Green Salon Collective (GSC), we love Earth Hour because it’s simple, shareable, and it gets teams talking. But we also love what it can become: a practical reset that helps salons cut waste, save energy, and make sustainability feel doable, not daunting.
Earth Hour isn’t just “lights out” anymore
Earth Hour started as a symbolic switch-off, and that still matters. But the movement now encourages everyone to “give an hour for Earth” in a way that suits their lives from learning, volunteering, getting outside, or taking a planet-positive action.
For salons, that’s powerful, because our impact is shaped by everyday habits: hot water, product use, laundry, and the “small stuff” that adds up fast.
What Earth Hour looks like from a salon perspective
1) Switch off, and switch on a better conversation
If your salon is open in the evening, you can still take part:
- Turn off non-essential lighting, signage, and displays for the hour.
- Share a simple message on socials: “We’re taking part in Earth Hour, here’s one change we’re making beyond tonight.”
If you’re not open, even easier: encourage your team and clients to take part at home at 8:30pm.
2) Make it a team “micro-training” hour
Earth Hour is a great excuse to bring everyone together for 15–20 minutes (before the switch-off) and pick one improvement to focus on for the next month. For example:
- reducing backwash water and heat loss
- tightening up waste separation
- reducing single-use where you can
- improving client education (without judgement, without lectures)
3) Use the hour to plan one practical upgrade
At GSC, we’re all about changes that are realistic on a busy Saturday, and upgrades that keep working long after the campaign moment has passed. Our whole mission is helping salons across the UK and Ireland recycle, recover and rethink what “normal” looks like in hair and beauty.
Earth Hour is a perfect time to choose one next step and put a date next to it.
A few “beyond Earth Hour” ideas salons can actually stick to
Cut energy where it’s hiding in plain sight
- Check timers for heating/air con, towel warmers, and back-of-house kit.
- Create a simple end-of-day shutdown list (who turns off what, and when).
- Reduce unnecessary hot-water use where it doesn’t improve the service.
Turn client chat into low-pressure action
Earth Hour is a gift for client conversations because it’s familiar and non-controversial. You can weave in:
- “We’re marking Earth Hour this weekend, want a couple of easy eco hair tips?”
- “If you ever fancy trying a lower-impact routine, we can recommend what works for your hair type.”
Celebrate progress, not perfection
Clients don’t need a flawless salon. They want to see honesty, momentum, and leadership. Earth Hour is a brilliant prompt to share:
- what you’ve already improved
- what you’re working on next
- how clients can help (in a way that feels positive)
