Foil Me: Foils made from recycled aluminium

Green Salon Collective are proudly partnered with Foil Me. At GSC we love to partner with brands who share our passion for creating a sustainable & ethical industry so Foil ME fits that perfectly.

Hairdressing foil is the most sustainable tool for highlighting and balayage. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise. The metals that you use in your salon, foil, colour tubes & cans are able to be recycled, no matter how dirty they are. You may not be able to recycle them with your local authorities but at GSC we can recycle it all.

Recycling used foil & colour tubes uses only around 5% of the energy and emissions needed to make it from the raw material bauxite. The metal can be recycled time and time again without loss of properties, so getting your aluminium foil and colour tubes recycled is one of the best things we can do for the environment.

Not only can GSC 100% recycle these metals we can even raise money from the process too.

Anytime GSC makes money from your materials we give 100% of it to charity.

Environmental impact

Aluminium foil & tubes

Aluminium is a resource that forms about 8% of the earth's crust. It is mined and extracted from bauxite, which contains the compound alumina, in an energy-intensive electrolytic process. Four tonnes of bauxite contains two tonnes of alumina, which yields one tonne of valuable aluminium. The metal is used in buildings, transport and other industrial applications, as well as packaging.

Aluminium is the most cost-effective material to recycle, because of the huge energy savings - up to 95%. In addition, all the scraps leftover from the aluminium production process can be melted down and used again and again. For this reason, recycling is part of the normal life-cycle for large industrial products - around 75% of all the aluminium ever made is still in circulation.

Recycling 1kg of aluminium saves up to:

● 6kg of bauxite

● 4kg of chemical products

● 14kWh of electricity.

By using ethical brands like Foil Me and recycling your waste with Green Salon Collective is the most sustainable option in our industry.

We wanted to know more about Foil ME so we spoke with the owner and founder Emily Ciardiello.

● Why foil me?

Foil Me is an environmentally conscience global brand that is driven by outstanding service and where the products are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they are designed to perform exceptionally. Foil Me strives to be a paperless company, where biodegradable and recyclable materials are chosen as alternatives for packaging and their foils are made from a percentage of recycled aluminium that are 100% recyclable, along with Foil Me’s illustrious brushes.

● How important is sustainability in hairdressing these days?

It’s very important for salons to be and remain sustainable. Hairdressing is an industry where a lot of waste is created so if we can each do our part by being environmentally conscious and choosing to recycle or repurpose as much as possible, then we can each have an impact on the way the world’s resources are being used.

● Who's your "eco-hero"?

Apple is a company that I admire for many reasons, however, environmentally, they are up there in terms of big tech companies. They have created several wind and solar farms to power their data centres, retail stores, corporate offices and any other building they need. They also use renewable energy resources and are very conscious about their products being long-lasting as opposed to “fast tech.” As well as this, they are making vast improvements in their environmental testing labs by ensuring their products are safe before going to market.

● What's your favourite "eco or sustainable" life hack or product?

I would have to say that my fave product for helping the environment whilst remaining healthy is my 2-litre stainless steel drink bottle – it ensures when I’m out and about that I’m always going to be hydrated, minimizing the need to buy plastic disposable drink bottles. It’s also really easy to clean and it has a handle for easy transporting!

● What's the best or worst environmental stat that you've read recently?

I’m actually really impressed with the number of companies that are choosing to reduce their carbon footprint, recycle and minimize damage to the environment these days. It’s like it’s in fashion or on-trend to be an environmentally conscious company which is fantastic as we have always been about reducing the detrimental impact a business can have on the earth. I am disappointed that some of the bigger companies are still choosing to destroy what they can for greed and profit, however, like Nestle, for example, are still having a devastating impact on the environment in areas such as carbon emissions, water use and deforestation.
