Anne Veck: Green Libertine
For us, a "Green Libertine" is someone who doesn't follow the conventional rule book, someone who stands up for what they believe in, who isn't afraid of the unknown, and is creating something new or leading the way.
Our Green Libertines will be joining us in creating a new direction for our industry, helping us lead the way towards changing our industry for the better.

Anne Veck has the following manifesto,
"Your hair should be beautiful.
Hairdressing should be professional.
Hairdressing should be ethical.
Hairdressing should be sustainable.
Hairdressing is art."
It sounds to us like she's ticking all the boxes of a Green Libertine, so we are delighted to have her on board helping us spread the sustainable love!
What did your salon do to achieve your carbon neutral and eco ward?
Anne - To get the Carbon Neutral Certification from Carbon Footprint Limited, we have had to produce figures for the gas and electricity consumption by the salon and mileage figures for all business travel: by car, taxi, train, bus and air travel. For 2019/20 this totalled 11.1 tonnes of CO2, 1.2 tonnes per employee, (about 1/3 of the average office-based workplace). We then offset the 11.1 tonnes by paying for tree planting in Kenya.
The salon has won 4 sustainable salon awards in the last 3 years and is in the finals of the Salon Business Awards Green Salon again for 2020. (we would love to win this for 3rd time!). Our entries have described all the sustainable actions we take in the salons, reducing carbon footprint and energy use, reducing plastic, recycling as much as possible and working with sustainable product suppliers, printers and equipment manufacturers. All reinforced with awareness campaigns for team members and clients.
Do your sustainability credentials bring new clients to your salon?
Anne - Without a doubt. Since our big eco refit in 2013, client numbers have increased on average by 10% per year, with a 20% surge in 2014. Post lockdown, we are seeing large numbers of new clients choosing us because of our green credentials.
What is your favourite, eco friendly, non-hairdressing product or service?
Anne - Rediscovering old-fashioned products like white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to use as salon cleaning products rather than harsh chemicals.
Who is your "eco-hero"?
Anne - Has to be Greta Thunberg. So young and yet so strong-willed and influential.
What is one change you'd like to see salons make?
Anne - To cut down on waste of all types. For example use only the amount of product actually needed and by turning the water off when rinsing colour and in between shampoos! We need a big awareness campaign by salon owners aimed at their teams!
